Roving exhibition on Language Fund projects
As part of its public education and publicity programmes, the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) will stage a roving exhibition to present some 40 recently completed and on-going Language Fund projects.
The exhibition will introduce the objectives and design, activities and results of these projects from 12 to 14 June at Park Court, Level 1, Pacific Place, Queensway; from 19 to 21 June at Footbridge Gallery, New Town Plaza, Sha Tin; and between 26 and 28 June at L1 the Expo, Metroplaza, Kwai Fong.
Students, teachers, educators, parents and the wider public will be able to appreciate and share the achievements of the Language Fund through these activities.
The exhibition will feature a wide range of projects supported by the Language Fund during the past few years. They include:
- resource development projects such as CD-ROMs on English usage;
- an on-line resource database for language teachers;
- a TV series on the correct usage of Chinese;
- language learning programmes such as English speaking day camps;
- celebrity seminars on the learning of Chinese journal and report writing programmes;
- projects to promote the teaching and learning of Putonghua;
- research on the implementation of using Chinese software package in classrooms; and
- development of school-based practice in the teaching and learning of reading in English in primary schools.
For the first time, SCOLAR will present the details of its in-house research project which aims to study the process of Chinese language development of primary students from Primary 1 to 6 and their language attainment at the end of Primary 6.
Six other research projects which were awarded grants to carry out research in response to SCOLAR's designated research titles will also be featured in this exhibition. The findings of these projects will provide useful empirical information for SCOLAR to address important issues raised in the Education Commission Report No. 6.
The public will also be able to gain first-hand information about the background of the Language Fund, the work of SCOLAR, and the details and achievements of funded projects through panel displays and interactive question-and-answer computer programme.
The exhibition will help deepen public awareness of the achievements of the Language Fund and the positive feedback from project beneficiaries.
This is the second exhibition organised by SCOLAR since the first one in May 1997. In April this year, SCOLAR organised a Language Fund Teachers' Seminar to disseminate the results of some 10 projects to front-line language teachers, while theme-based seminars and public exhibitions would be organised regularly.
