With the support of the Language Fund, the Education Bureau (EDB) launched the "Professional Enhancement Grant Scheme for Chinese Language Teachers (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language)" ("the Scheme") in the 2014/15 school year. The Scheme has been terminated with effect from the 2023/24 school year.
The Scheme aims at encouraging serving Chinese Language teachers at primary and secondary levels to pursue structured part-time Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma and/or Master's Degree programme on teaching Chinese to non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students so as to equip themselves with the necessary pedagogical and intercultural knowledge and skills for teaching Chinese to NCS students.
Applicants who commence the relevant recognised programmes of studies from the 2019/20 school year may receive 50% of the tuition fee of the entire programme of study, up to a maximum of $64,000, upon successful completion of the studies. Applicants who continue to teach NCS students Chinese in schools offering formal local curriculum for a total of three years within the five years upon their graduation will be eligible to receive an extra 30% of the tuition fee of the entire programme of study, up to an additional maximum of $30,000. To apply for this extra 30% of the tuition fee, applicants are required to submit their applications with the principals' certification.
Applications for reimbursement of grant are processed on a first come, first served basis. The time taken for processing an application depends on individual cases and the number of applications received. Under normal circumstances, EDB will notify the applicant of the result/progress within 30 working days after the receipt of the application.
