With the support of the Language Fund, the Education Bureau (EDB) launched the "Professional Enhancement Grant Scheme for Chinese Language Teachers (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language)" ("the Scheme") in the 2014/15 school year. The Scheme has been terminated with effect from the 2023/24 school year.
The Scheme aims at encouraging serving Chinese Language teachers at primary and secondary levels, through the provision of grant, to pursue structured part-time Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma and/or Master's Degree programme on teaching Chinese to non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students so as to equip them with the necessary pedagogical knowledge and skills as well as inter-cultural understanding in teaching Chinese to NCS students.
Applicants who commence the recognised programmes of studies from the 2019/20 school year may receive 50% of the tuition fee of an entire programme of study, up to a maximum of $64,000, upon successful completion of the relevant programmes under the Scheme. In addition, applicants who continue to teach NCS students Chinese in schools offering formal local curriculum for a total of three years within the five years upon their graduation will be able to receive an extra 30% of the tuition fee of an entire programme of study per applicant, up to an additional maximum of $30,000. To apply for this extra 30% of the tuition fee, applicants are required to submit their applications with the principals' certification.
Applications for release of grant are processed on a first-come-first-served basis. The time taken for processing an application depends on individual case and the number of applications received at a particular time. Under normal circumstances, EDB will notify the applicant of the result/progress within 30 working days after the receipt of the application.
