English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers – Level One

Objectives

This short course (28 hours) for kindergarten (KG) teachers aims at –

  • enhancing KG teachers’ English language proficiency and equipping them with essential English language skills for conducting English language activities for young children in class.

Content

  • English language subject knowledge and skills of teachers, including but not limited to, phonics and pronunciation, grammar, connected speech and classroom English for conducting English activities for young children in the classroom.

 

English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers – Level Two

Objectives

This short course (31 hours) for kindergarten (KG) teachers aims at –

  • enhancing KG teachers’ understanding of early English language and literacy development/learning of young children; and
  • boosting the confidence and competencies of KG teachers in pedagogies of exposing young children to English in integrated/thematic approach.

Content

  • Introduction to second language acquisition (English language) of young children;
  • Early English language and literacy development of young children;
  • Two to three effective English language teaching strategies for developing oracy and literacy of young children of English as a second/foreign language, such as Storytelling, Shared Reading, and related developmentally-appropriate English language activities for young children; and
  • A three-hour tutorial for participants to report and share their observations/experiences in planning and trials of the English language teaching strategies in their classrooms which they have learned in the Programme.

 

English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Principals

Objectives

This 30-hour short course for kindergarten (KG) principals aims at –

  • enhancing KG principals' understanding of early English language and literacy development/learning of young children; and
  • enhancing the capability of KG principals in pedagogies of exposing young children to English in integrated/thematic approach and devising their school plan for exposing young children to English.

Content

  • Introduction to second language acquisition (English Language) of young children;
  • Early English language and literacy development of young children;
  • Effective English language teaching strategies and developmentally-appropriate English language activities for young children;
  • Design, implementation and evaluation of school plan of English language exposure of young children in integrated approach; and
  • Interface between the kindergartens and primary schools in English language learning/exposure in local context in regard of readiness of young children.
