WEC invites HRs and SMEs to share experience in workplace English training
The Workplace English Campaign (WEC) is inviting human resources professionals (HRs), small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners and training personnel to a public seminar on workplace English training to be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on 15 November (Tuesday).
"Several successful applicants of WEC's Funding Scheme for Workplace English Training would share their experience in commissioning in-house English training tailor-made for their employees," a spokesperson for the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) said today (25 October).
"We note that this is one of the most widely welcomed topics among similar events organised by WEC recently. The application figure of our Funding Scheme has also grown steadily. It shows that there is an increasing demand for in-house workplace English training. Therefore, we decided to discuss this topic at a larger-scale seminar with more employers so they would better understand WEC and the Funding Scheme as well as relevant training matters," he said.
"It will also be a good opportunity for us to exchange views with the HRs and employers on the future development of WEC," SCOLAR spokesperson said.
The seminar will be conducted in Cantonese. Seats are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Interested parties are required to reserve their seats on the WEC website (http://www.english.gov.hk) starting tomorrow (26 October) at 9:00 a.m. The reservation deadline is 12:00 noon on 7 November.
Since its inception in 2000, WEC's Funding Scheme has sponsored about 24,000 working adults to receive training and to attain the relevant Hong Kong Workplace English Benchmarks (HKWEB) of their job type through any of the international business English examinations specified by WEC.
The application figure of the Funding Scheme has continued to grow over the last nine months since it began to focus on supporting employers in the provision of in-house tailor-made English training commissioned for their employees. As at end September, the Funding Scheme has already received over 100 applications for subsidies on such training, involving funding amounting to nearly $1.7 million.
To allow potential applicants get more information on the training services available in the market, WEC will also stage a mini-expo at the venue showcasing the in-house tailor-made workplace English training offered by some of the course providers. They will also hold a series of briefing sessions during the event to introduce their services in details.
The mini-expo will be open for public admission between 14 and 16 November at the Exhibition Gallery, 4/F Hong Kong Cultural Centre. For the briefing session schedule, please refer to the WEC website. Admission to the seminar and the mini-expo is free of charge.
WEC is one of the Language Fund projects steered by SCOLAR. SCOLAR was established in 1996 to advise the Government on language education issues and the use of the Language Fund.
