Initiated by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and organised by the Education Department for Primary 4 students, about 280 secondary school teachers and 2,500 students from 62 secondary schools hosted the English Language Camp in their schools for about 8 200 Primary Four students from 75 primary schools across the territory.
The Chairman of SCOLAR, Mr Michael Tien, the Secretary for Education and Manpower, Mrs Fanny Law, and the Director of Education, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, visited one of the 62 campsites of the English Language Camp at SKH Tsang Shiu Tim Secondary School in Shatin this (9 March) afternoon.
They enjoyed an English-speaking talent show staged by about 140 campers, joined them in singing the camp song and bid farewell to them as the two-day Camp came to an end. Day 1 of the camp was held on last Saturday (2 March).
With the help of about 420 native-English speaking students from 11 English School Foundation schools, international schools and two universities, an English-rich environment was created in the Camp where participants were motivated to use English through a wide range of fun-filled, language-rich activities.
The Camp programme, designed by a team led by Dr Joseph Hung of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, included language games, songs, art and craft, storytelling, action rhymes, and a talent show that provided a relaxing and support language learning environment to the campers.
The primary objective of the Camp was to help Primary 4 students overcome the psychological barrier to speaking and using English through two days of lively and light-hearted activities. The camp also provided a valuable opportunity to develop the leadership potential of secondary school students.
