Chairman of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), Professor Cheng Kai-ming, today (29 November) encouraged Hong Kong people to master Putonghua in order to maintain their competitive edge in the global economy.
Attending the finale show for SCOLAR’s Promotion of Putonghua 2009 today, Professor Cheng wrapped up the seven school-based and community-wide activities launched by SCOLAR in 2009 to promote “lively learning and use of Putonghua”. More than 7 000 students and public participated in these activities.
SCOLAR would continue its promotional efforts in 2010 to provide more opportunities for Hong Kong people to use Putonghua.
Organisations are invited to submit proposals to SCOLAR for grants to organise promotional activities targeting teachers, students and the general public. The submission deadline is next Thursday (3 December).
