SCOLAR supports research on effectiveness of NET scheme
The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) today (24 September) endorsed the award of $2.87 million for a two-year research study to monitor and evaluate the Native English-speaking Teachers (NET) Scheme. The approval of the Trustee of the Language Fund will be sought to finance the project from the Fund.
The proposed research covers over 40 schools with NETs, including two special schools. Questionnaires will be issued to NETs, other teachers, principals, students and parents.
Students' language abilities will be tested periodically during the two years to assess the effect of the NET Scheme on student language learning. In addition, the impact of the NETs on school social and professional life will be studied.
"It is important to critically assess the effectiveness of the NET Scheme during the initial two-year period," said Dr Daniel Tse Chi-wai, Chairman of SCOLAR.
"The research proposal not only appropriately addresses the NETs' contribution to students' English language development, but also studies the role of NETs within the school community. The results will serve to advise the Government in its overall review of the NET Scheme."
At its meeting today, SCOLAR also endorsed 12 general applications and one research project totalling $6.37 million. These proposals include English language enhancement courses and activities, drama and poetry workshops, production of English drama radio and TV programmes and production of a multi-media Chinese language enhancement software for primary school students.
