Current term of SCOLAR extended
The Secretary for Education and Manpower, Professor Arthur K. C. Li announced today (29 November) that the term of 13 serving members of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) would be extended to 31 March 2003.
"Since early 2001, SCOLAR has been conducting a holistic review of language education in Hong Kong. The Committee will soon issue its review report for public consultation," Professor Li said.
"After considering the views of the public, the Committee will finalise its recommendations for the Administration's consideration. The process is expected to complete by the end of March 2003," he said.
"We are, therefore, extending the term of serving SCOLAR Members by four months from 1 December 2002 to 31 March 2003 to enable them to conclude the review," he added.
Professor Li said that he looked forward to serving SCOLAR Members' continued contribution to this difficult and yet essential task of reviewing the policy and measures on language education in Hong Kong.
He thanked the Honourable Bernard Chan and Professor Chris Candlin for their advice and contribution to the work of SCOLAR. Both are unable to continue serving on the Committee, the former due to competing demands on his time while the latter has returned to Australia.
The Education and Manpower Bureau is now reviewing the current advisory committee structure with a view to streamlining procedures and enabling a more holistic approach to language education.
SCOLAR was set up in 1996 to advise the Government on language education issues. It also oversees the operation of the Language Fund.
