Award-winning actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai has been invited to star in a new Announcement in the Public Interest (API) as part of the publicity drive for the Workplace English Campaign (WEC).
The API will go on air tonight (29 August).
"Tony is a good role model to Hong Kong people. He's locally born and trained, yet his success and popularity in the film industry have transcended international boundaries," said Mr Michael Tien, Chairman of the Steering Committee on WEC.
"Tony shares our concern about the English standard of the Hong Kong workforce, and we are most grateful that he has identified himself with the worthwhile cause of promoting English standards.
"On the strength of his popular appeal, his appearance in the API will definitely heighten the public's interest in the Campaign," Mr Tien added.
The new API is developed upon the concept of the Campaign's previous APIs, "Equip yourself with better English and grasp your opportunity for better prospects".
Mr Leung said, "I'm delighted to be involved in WEC and to be able to share my experience in learning English with the people of Hong Kong. I have no doubt that one needs to master good English skills to achieve success in this globalised world."
WEC is a year-long initiative of the Government to heighten public awareness of the importance of workplace English and to raise the English standard of the workforce.
