Appointments to SCOLAR announced
The Secretary for Education and Manpower, Mr Joseph W. P. Wong, today (2 November) announced that the Chief Executive had made the following appointments to the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research(SCOLAR).
Dr Daniel Tse Chi-wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of the Hong Kong Baptist University, is re-appointed in his personal capacity as Chairman for a two-year term with effect from 1 October 1998.
The following seven incumbent members are re-appointed in their personal capacities for a two-year term with effect from 1 October 1998:
- Professor CHAN Wing-ming
- Mr CHONG Yun-cheung
- Mr Michael KWEE Chong-kok
- Mrs LAU Pong Elim
- Dr Daniel SO Wing-cheung
- Hon TSANG Yok-sing
- Professor Amy TSUI Bik-may
The following seven new members are also appointed to SCOLAR in their personal capacities for a two-year term with effect from 1 October 1998:
- Professor Christopher Noel CANDLIN, Chair Professor of Applied Linguistics, Department of English, City University of Hong Kong
- Mr CHAN Wing-kwong, Headmaster, Po Leung Kuk Luk Hing Too Primary School (AM)
- Mr Anthony W. K. CHOW, practising solicitor and President of the Law Society of Hong Kong
- Mr Tim HOFFMAN, Director, Spencer Stuart (Hong Kong)
- Professor LEONG Che-kan, Dean of School of Languages in Education, Hong Kong Institute of Education
- Mr Richard Eric PHILLIPS, Native-speaking English Teacher, TWGHs Lee Chung Dea Memorial College
- Mr WONG Kam-wa, Putonghua panel chair, Hong Kong Taoist Association The Yuen Yuen Institute No. 1 Secondary School
The Deputy Director of Education and Deputy Secretary for Education and Manpower will continue to serve as Members of SCOLAR, both in their ex-officio capacities.
SCOLAR was set up in 1996 to advise the Government on language education issues. It is tasked with conducting research into the language education needs of Hong Kong, developing policies designed to meet those needs, and monitoring and evaluating the language in education policies. It also oversees the operation of the Language Fund and advises the Director of Education, in her capacity as Trustee of the Language Fund, on grant applications.
"We welcome the appointment of the seven new members to SCOLAR," Mr Joseph W. P. Wong said.
"They further expand SCOLAR's representation, particularly in respect of front-line educators. I look forward to SCOLAR's considered advice on language education issues," he said.
Mr Wong also thanked the 11 retiring members, Mrs Amy Chan Cheng Yi-yim, Dr Gregory James, Professor Koh Tai-ann, Mr Philip Edward Leetch, Hon Margaret Ng, Professor Andrew Parkin, Mr Brian Renwick, Mr Michael Sze, Mrs Tai Lam Sau-mui, Mr Michael Tien Puk-sun and Mr Tung Chiao for their valuable advice and support to SCOLAR in the past years.
