Appointments to SCOLAR announced

The Secretary for Education and Manpower, Professor Arthur K. C. Li, announced today (17 June) new appointments and re-appointments to the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) for the term from 1 July 2005 to 30 June 2007.

Mr Michael Tien (Chairman of the G2000 Group) who has served as Chairman of SCOLAR since November 2000, has been re-appointed Chairman of the Committee for another two years.

Newly appointed in their personal capacity to serve as members are two language teachers, Ms Ng Kit-chee (English Language Teacher, Aldrich Bay Government Primary School) and Ms Wong Fung-yee (Chinese Language Panel, Fukien Secondary School).

Professor Li welcomed the new members to SCOLAR. "Together with the serving members and the ex-officio members who were appointed to SCOLAR on 1 April 2003, they will help steer the implementation of the committee's language education review recommendations and advise on other language education-related issues both inside and outside the school sector," he said.

Professor Li also thanked the outgoing member Professor Chan Wing-ming, who retired in June 2004, for his contribution to the language education review and other undertakings of SCOLAR over the past years.

Other re-appointed SCOLAR members are Dr Betty Chan (Director, Yew Chung Education Foundation), Mr Stephen C. W. Chan (General Manager, Television Broadcasting, Television Broadcasts Limited), Mr Tony Choi (Executive Director, Hong Kong Garment Manufacturing Co. Ltd), Mrs Shirley Duthie (Principal, the Hong Kong Institute of Education Jockey Club Primary School with effective from 1 August 2005), Ms Junia Ho (Managing Director, Relybase Consultants Limited), Ms Lau Siu-ling (Principal, PLK Choi Kai Yau School), Dr Evelyn Man (Assistant Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Ms Virginia Ng (Managing Director, DIYR Communications Ltd), Mrs Or Ho Yim Ching (Principal, Holy Trinity College), and Dr Wong Pui-kwong (Associate Professor, Department of Chinese, Translation & Linguistics, City University of Hong Kong).

SCOLAR was set up in 1996 to advise the Government on language education issues.  It also advises on the use of the Language Fund.
