Appointments to SCOLAR announced
The Secretary for Education and Manpower, Mrs Fanny Law, today (10 November) announced appointments to the new term of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR).
The members appointed will serve for two years until 30 November 2002. They are:

The newly appointed chairman, Mr Michael Tien, served as a member of the Language Fund Advisory Committee from 1994 to 1996, and as a SCOLAR member from 1996 to 1998. He has chaired the Steering Committee on the Workplace English Campaign since October 1999 and serves on the Vocational Training Council, the Employees Retraining Board and the Broadcasting Authority, etc.
Other reappointed SCOLAR members are Professor Christopher Noel Candlin, Chair Professor of English at the City University of Hong Kong; Professor Chan Wing-ming, Dean of the School of Languages in Education of the Hong Kong Institute of Education; and Mr David Mennier, a Native-English speaking teacher.
The new members are drawn from academics, school principals, language teachers, professionals, parents and businessmen.
Mr Bernard Chan is Deputy Managing Director of an insurance company and representative of the Insurance functional constituency in the Legislative Council.
Dr Betty Chan is the Director of the Yew Chung Education Foundation.
Dr Cheung Kwai-yeung is the Head of the Putonghua Channel of Radio Television Hong Kong.
Mr Tony Choi is the Director of a garment manufacturing company.
Ms Fung Oi-lin is a member of the Committee on Home-school Cooperation.
Ms Kendra Ip is an English panel chair of Pooi To Middle School.
Ms Lau Siu-ling is the principal of PLK Mrs Chan Nam Cheong Memorial Primary School and Chairman of the Primary Chinese Language Education Research Association.
Dr Donald Li is a medical practitioner.
Ms Virginia Ng is a public relations consultant.
Dr Tse Shek-kam is Associate Professor, Department of Curriculum Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong.
Mrs Nancy Wong is the principal of Marymount Secondary School.
Miss Yung Heung-hung is a Chinese and Putonghua teacher of Pui Kiu Middle School.
"We welcome the new members to SCOLAR. They will further expand the perspectives on language education and research. We look forward to SCOLAR's considered advice on these issues," Mrs Law said.
Mrs Law also thanked Dr Daniel Tse Chi-wai who has chaired SCOLAR since its inception in 1996, and the other retiring members, Mr Chan Wing-kwong, Mr Anthony Chow Wing-kin, Mr Tim Hoffman, Mr Wong Kam-wa, Mr Chong Yun-cheung, Mrs Elim Lau Pong, Dr Daniel So Wing-cheung, Mr Tsang Yok-sing and Prof Amy Tsui Bik-may, for their contribution to the work of SCOLAR.
SCOLAR was set up in 1996 to advise the Government on language education issues, coordinate language education and research initiatives in Hong Kong and oversee the application of the Language Fund.
